Alfa Logo Fixing a Giulia 'Wobbly' back end Alfa Logo

Hi there

I read your tips on the wobbly back end of the Giulia and I have noticed that you never mentioned the plastic spacer washers that fit between the tee arm and the rubber bushes that bolt onto the chassis. If they are still there you would probably not have bothered to replace them. On all except one car that I have worked on or stripped they had fallen out. The plastic they made in the early years did not stand up to time very well and ended up getting all brittle and crumbling away. The one car they where still on had been standing for a very long time and had a very low mileage but was rusted beyond sensible repair. When I fitted this tee bar to my car it wasn't long before they went missing as well.  I found that by making up some spacers from nylon in the form of a c (i.e. cut a slot just too small to go over the centre pin into a large washer turned up in a lathe) cured my back end wobble completely. The thickness I measured on the car and made them to suite.

Picture of Rear Suspension Trunion with specs for clearances

Thanks Steven!
This excerpt of the Giulia suspension manual page discusses your issue in a little more detail.  The car is designed to have a MAXIMUM of 1 mm clearance, so there would naturally be a nasty side-to-side wobble if one or both of the plastic washers were missing.  Nylon, Delrin, or better yet, Teflon all have some slipperiness so that the trunnion can still pivot to soak up bumps while the washer is compressed between the bushing and the trunnion during cornering.  You should check periodically to make sure they are in place, as hard driving will eventually chew up your new washers just like the originals.  Your solution is MUCH easier than removing the trunion from the car and pulling the bushings just to replace the plastic washers!!
