Remove and Replace Speedometer
- ... the obvious points are:
- wiggle your right hand up under the dash
- remove the two knurled nuts (and the tiny lock washers) and the
"L"-shaped brackets from the back of the speedo,
- unscrew the knurled nut holding the cable to the speedo
- unscrew the 6" odometer reset cable from the side of the speedo
since the knob won't go through the grommet under the dash
- Then you can pull it out far enough to get to the back and
label and remove the wiring if needed
- Reassembly is the reverse... etc
- The not so obvious part is getting that reset cable back in!..
I spent hours trying to thread that connector back into the speedo from
behind the dash
- remove the rubber grommet from the reset cable bracket
- screw the cable back into the speedo while you have it out
- re-install the speedo, angling it to get the cable in first
- thread the cable through the bracket under the dash
- finally, re-install the grommet, over the reset cable end
and press back into the bracket hole
- Finally, you may find that the generator light works backwards now...
(dark when at idle and glowing as engine speed increases)... you probably
disconnected the wire leading from the speedometer to the generator light
on the tachometer, so check that before assuming your generator has
gone bad.
