Alfantics October 2004 Stories

Picnic Delayed by Storm Threat; Now October 17

For the first time in recent history, the club’s Annual Picnic had to be postponed due to weather. While many awoke to an overcast sky on Sept. 18 and never felt a drop of rain, the threat of a pelting from the remnants of a tropical storm were enough to make a postponement the safe call. Plus, our hosts at Pearmund Vineyards had faced heavy winds the day before, which took the roof off a barn and left them without power for hours.
The picnic has been rescheduled for Sunday, October 17. It has also been expanded to include a driving tour in advance that morning.
The driving tour will meet up at Pearmund at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. From there, we will head out and visit two other vineyards, Oasis and Gray Ghost, and enjoy driving some scenic backroads. We will return to Pearmund at 1:00 p.m. when the picnic begins. It is very important that you RSVP if you are coming along for the drive, so we have maps and give the vineyards ample notice of crowd size!
As in past years, the event will be a potluck (here’s hoping those who had food prepared for September froze it!) Attendees are encouraged to bring grub of their choice in a portion big enough for 6-10. We will have a grill going if you need it. Please RSVP to Denny Broud, dennisbroud@aol.com, or Sherry Thackeray, 703/807-0798, or TwoThacks@aol.com, to share what you’ll bring. Directions on back page!
Chris suggests guests enjoy “the most local of wines,â€ a suggestion we endorse —Pearmund makes great wine. The Club provides soft drinks. Feel free to bring beer, but please NOT wines from other vineyards (ye olde faux pas!) Vineyard tour at 2:00 for those interested. Wine tasting, $2, refunded with purchase. www.pearmundcellars.com.
Denny is bringing a bocce set, and Sherry has horseshoes. Similar pastimes welcome! If you have folding lawn chairs bring ’em. And if more tornadoes, hurricanes or tsunamis strike... we’ll try again next year!

Rockville Car Show Welcomes Alfa Entrants, October 16

One of the region’s finest car shows, the Rockville Car Show, will be held on Oct. 16. The show is open to all cars manufactured in or before 1979. That includes a lot of our members, of course, and so Alfa owners are encouraged to come out and join in the fun of the show!
It would be a particularly fine year to display a Giulietta or Giulia, or their derivatives, to share the story of their 50th anniversary with fans of all the other car marques.
The grounds of Glenview Mansion will be transformed when more than 400 antique and classic automobiles go on display. Twenty car clubs, from Packard to Thunderbird, are represented during this grand event, while auto collectors

Beachroads Ramble, Ocean City Show on Hold

The European car festival in Ocean City, which had been scheduled for Oct. 23, has been postponed. Our club's "Beachroads Ramble", designed to coincide with the show, is suspended as well.
We will of course keep you posted as developments occur!

Alfas in Baltimore in July

Space didn't allow us to run these pictures last month... At the July meeting at Chiapparelli's in Baltimore, our gracious host restaurant reserved parking for us out front. It was great to see a row of Alfas in Little Italy. They got a lot of attention and compliments from passers-by.
The participants were a multi-generational crew. Jack and Terry Rugh came in their stylish black 1969 Berlina, Sherry and Brewster Thackeray in its granddaughter (a 1991 164L), Russ Baer in his 1973 Spider,  Vic Rini in one equally red and but more than a decade newer, Frank Smith in his GTV and Pat Graziosi in his Alfetta.
